Why PeaksCompass Exists

Because good judgement outdoors is built from awareness,

PeaksCompass exists to explore the quiet, often overlooked decisions that shape a safe and enjoyable day in the hills. After decades of moving through outdoor environments — and years of supporting others to do the same — I’ve seen how confidence grows when people understand how to think, not just what to do.

The project is built around simple, real scenarios: a change in weather, a junction in the path, a shift in terrain. These moments are small, but they’re where judgement is formed. PeaksCompass uses them to slow things down, to notice what’s happening, and to reflect on the choices available.

My background in education and risk management has shown me the value of clarity, preparation and calm thinking. PeaksCompass brings those principles into the outdoors, offering a reflective approach to planning, navigation and decision‑making.

At its heart, PeaksCompass exists to help people move through the outdoors with confidence, curiosity and care — one small decision at a time.

About the author

A life shaped by the outdoors.

My connection with the outdoors began early — I completed my first climbing route at the age of six, (I can still hear my dads voice in my mind encouraging me up my fist slab at Brimham) and that sense of adventure has stayed with me ever since. Over more than forty years I’ve explored UK hills, alpine routes and long days on the trail, learning how weather, terrain and judgement shape every journey.

My outdoor skills were first built through Scouts, Air Cadets and the Duke of Edinburgh Award, first as a participant and later as an assessor. Along the way I gained qualifications including Basic Expedition Leader and Moor & Fell awards, and I’ve continued to learn through every group I’ve supported and every route I’ve taken.

Alongside this, I’ve spent over fifteen years leading pupils and staff in education, responsible for planning, risk assessment and safety. I hold IOSH risk management certification, and that experience has shaped a calm, structured approach to decision‑making.

More recently, gaining my Pilot certification PPL(A) has added a new dimension to how I see landscapes, navigation and risk — viewing the terrain from above has deepened my understanding of how choices connect.
